Big day of training today… yep, I let the week slip by (almost) and had only completed 7 hours of my target 13.5 hours of training this week. And with Easter tomorrow, the family is expecting Dad to spend the day with them doing Eastery things. So after a little negotiating with the wife last night, it was determined that a long training day on Saturday was the preferred solution. So… let’s see, I need to do a 15.2 mile long run this week… how about a ride around Lake Washington and then a half marathon and then some for a brick. Let’s see… 53.5 miles + 15.2 = 68.7 miles… What’s that, 98% of a half-ironman… Sounds like fun right?
Here comes the rambling part….

Yep, this weekend I went back to a bike with gears… it’s the first time I’ve used gears since last October, and frankly… it’s weird shit man! What am I supposed to do with all these things? And not having to pedal as I slow down? Being able to actually stop spinning my legs? What a strange sensation?

Week 8 Complete – Whew! I’m finally done with Base 1… This last week was really hard. First of all 16 hours of training. That’s not the most I’ve done in a week, but it felt like a lot with all the other things I’ve got going on. Second, speaking of things going on, this week started out with 3 days “vacation”… which was actually pretty stressful for me, as it meant adapting my training schedule around the vacation, and it put a cramp in getting work done which meant more pressure on the training schedule. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it Thursday night, but it all worked out in the end. Like last week, I am being particularly aware of trying to keep in a nice low to mid effort base zone, so although there is a lot of volume of hours the work effort in each session has been low. That being said, I was pretty tired last night, and this weeks rest/recovery week couldn’t have come at a better time.
Thursday night, I was doubtful I was going to be able to make my required training for the week, so I had to sit down and make a weekend game plan. I had to complete 9 hours over the weekend. A couple long rides, a couple of runs, some swimming, and a strength session with my buddy Tyler made everything workout. The highlight was clearly the Chilly Hilly.
Here are the details for this week…

Week 7 Complete – This was a big week jumping to 14.5 hours of workouts. This isn’t the most exercise I’ve ever done in a week, as I had several 16+ hour weeks last year, but this is definitely a lot for this early in the season. The good news is that I am being particularly aware of trying to keep in a nice low to mid effort base zone, so although the hours are long they aren’t particularly hard.
I had to pile up the hours on the weekend again because I was so busy during the week with work. Next week looks to be a similar challenge as we are doing a mini-vacation to Victoria BC for Mon-Wed. Although my wife made sure the hotel has a pool and fitness center, I am sure that it will be difficult (read: impossible) to put in 2:22 of exercise per day. This weekend is the Chilly Hilly, the first “organized” ride of the year around here. It will be fun to catch up with some of my buddies from the cycling community. But more on that next week.
Here are the details for this week…
